Description
An easy recipe for cake batter rice krispie treats!
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup (4 Tbsp; 56g) unsalted butter
- 1 (10 oz.) bag of marshmallows
- 2/3 cup boxed yellow or white cake mix (the dry cake mix, not the batter)
- 6 and 1/2 cups rice krispie cereal
- 1/2 cup sprinkles
Instructions
- Spray a 11×7-inch baking pan with nonstick spray. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Add the marshmallows and stir constantly. Once the marshmallows are completely melted, stir in the dry cake mix. Remove pan from heat.
- Stir in the cereal until it is completely coated with the marshmallow mixture. Mix in half of the sprinkles. Press into prepared baking pan and top with the remaining sprinkles. When I press rice krispie treats into a pan, I use a spatula sprayed with nonstick spray, making it easier to press down. Press down lightly, as too much pressure will create hard rice krispie treats.
- Chill for at least 30 minutes and cut into squares. Squares stay fresh at room temperature for up to 1 week.
Notes
- Special Tools (affiliate links): 11×7-Inch Pan | Large Saucepan (like a Dutch oven) | Silicone Spatula

Hi there! I want to make these but am curious how the flour in the cake batter is safe to eat since it is not baked?
Thank you! 🙂
Hi Alexis, if you’re concerned about consuming raw cake mix, sprinkle it on a lined baking sheet and bake for 3–5 minutes at 350°F (177°C) before using in the recipe. The heat should kill any bacteria.
Can I use corn flakes instead of rice crispy s?
Did anyone use a 9×13 pan? Are they too thin or any adjustments to proportions for 9×13?
Hi Nicole, you can make the recipe as is for slightly thinner bars in a 9×13 pan. Or, you can try slightly increasing the proportions for thicker bars — we’re unsure of the best amounts. Let us know if you give anything a try!
I made these to celebrate Back to School for my 10 year old daughter. So easy to make! My daughter was thrilled and will have these in her lunch for dessert during the first week.
Amazing! These are sooo good!! My son requested these for his birthday dessert and now both my kids only want these for their birthday vice cake or cupcakes. Win!
I love birthday cake flavored anything, and these are no exception. I absolutely love the birthday cake Rice Krispies treats they sell in the store, but there is no comparison to freshly homemade rice Kristy treats. I made these exactly as directed and drizzled some melted white chocolate on top after they cooled and they are amazing. I foresee this recipe being used frequently in the future!
made this with funfetti batter and it was a huge hit! 10/10 best rice crispy i’ve ever had.
I used a strawberry cake mix! Yummy!
So for the cake mix ingredient…you don’t need to bake the cake, just dump in 2/3 cup of the powder (no added eggs, oil, etc)? Thanks.
So yummy and super easy to make! Love the cake batter flavor and the colorful look of the sprinkles!
These are my go to rice crispy treats now! I have made many different flavors! Lemon, pumpkin spice, chocolate!!! Love it!
Hi,
I made these for my daughters birthday treat for school. They turned out really hard. I didn’t press them down hard at all…I made a second batch really quick in the morning and same thing. Any ideas why this happened?? It doesn’t seem like anyone else has had that issue. They were really yummy!! Just on the harder side!!
It could be that the marshmallow mixture got cooked too much, like hard candy.
I made this as a dessert at my sister’s summer cookout. It was an easy and delicious party treat liked by all!
I have made many of your recipes and you are a go to when I am thinking of something sweet for my family. Your roll out sugar cookie dough is my family’s favorite cookie at all the holidays. These did not work for me. I followed the directions, and used fresh ingredients, I enjoy baking and have been since I started learning in the 3rd grade. These were so challenging to stir after I added to cake mix, like a workout. And, then adding the cereal was torture, and then the sprinkles? The whole thing was too firm by then, unlike usual rice krispie treats. I questioned the 11×7 pan at that point, but it was greased, so I used it. They are so hard to cut and to take a bite out of. I cut them up for my son who won’t eat chocolate and that is why I made them (backup plan for my Dad’s bday party). He told me they tasted good, but he just couldn’t chew them. I love the idea, but not sure if the cake mix needed some moisture or something.
Hi!
Can you freeze the leftovers to save them for another time?
I’ve never tried that with Rice Krispie Treats, so I wanted to double check!
thanks!
My mouth started watering!
Can these be made with marshmallow puff instead? I have relatives who cannot eat the gelatin in the marshmallow.Â
Have you tried making these using almond and butter emulsions (like your cupcake puppy chow) instead of the cake mix? Or does the cake mix add more than just flavor?
I haven’t– but it’s worth a try! The cake mix really just adds flavor.
i had to make something quick for a family reunion, made two pans so I could try them before I took them.Â
My only question, is 9:30 to early to eat an entire pan of Rice Krispies by myself?Â
Not at all. Though I’m not the best person to ask!
Ha!
If using mini-marshmallows, should I use the whole 10 oz. bag or 4 cups like some recipes call for when making regular Rice Krispie Treats?
Use an entire 10-ounce bag.
Just wondering if I could use salted butter instead of unsalted? Thanks!
That would be fine. I do that all the time.
Sally, these look delicious! I was considering making Rice Krispy Treat cake for my daughter’s 3rd birthday in a few months, but this is the perfect combo of cake and krispies!
Hi-thank you for such a fabulous treat! I made these yesterday and they are outstanding!!
Sally, I tried this recipe today and my family and I think it was delicious! I used plain cheerios and homemade cake mix here’s the recipe for it; 2 cups all purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, and 1 tablespoon baking powder. Its so easy and pretty good! I haven’t baked it into a cake though… but anyways I just thought I would share it with you, because I was really pleased with how it turn out… P.S. This recipe = one 18.5 oz box cake mix. 🙂 The website I got it from is: Afewshortcuts.com
How perfect, Kelly! Thanks so much for sharing!
Made your cake batter blondies and brought them to work. They were a hit! I made these today, and plan on bringing them to feed my crew on our flight tomorrow. Both recipes took literally minutes. You’re a genius!
Sounds like you love cake batter as much as I do Stef! So glad you made them – two of my favorite recipes 🙂
Hey, does anyone know how much this makes, and if I double it, can I still only get one box of cake mix? Thanks!
yes only 1 box mix will be sufficient for doubling the recipe. Makes approx 24 squares.
I just made these. They are delicious and incredibly easy to make! This is definitely a great treat to bring to a get-together and if you need to bring a food item but are crunched for time. Thanks for the recipe! 🙂
Lindsey, that is so nice to hear! They really are perfect for a party or gathering of friends. Everyone seems to LOVE cake batter.
Just made these for my daughter’s slumber party and they are amazing!! Thank you!
Glad to hear it Jen!! Thanks for saying hi and letting me know. 🙂
These are a great use of the left over cake mix from the Cake Batter Cinnamon Rolls! Absolutely delicious and fun.
