Need pie inspiration? Here’s a selection of trusted Thanksgiving pie recipes including pumpkin pie, apple pie, sweet potato pie, coconut cream pie, and more!
First, Pie Crust
Before browsing these Thanksgiving pie recipes, make sure you have a quality pie crust recipe. This is my absolute favorite pie crust recipe and one of the most popular recipes on this website. The careful ratio of butter and shortening makes a pliable dough that turns into a buttery, flaky crust. I also have an all butter pie crust if you prefer just butter.
Pie Crust Success Tips:
- Temperature: Use COLD ingredients.
- Flavor and Texture: Not all fats are created equal. This recipe uses a mix of shortening and butter for a pliable dough that bakes up both buttery and flaky.
- Avoid Cracking Crust: Use enough ice water.

Q: What are your favorite pie recipes?
I can’t find the temperature to cook my all butter crust for apple pie
Hi Veronica, see this apple pie post for baking instructions and baking temperatures (steps 4 & 8 have the temperatures).
i Like i very much but i like to see more Recipes becaues of sally i need to see ow to bake what is the brand and how much it cost to by and the like cake or pie or cookies but makeit easy to make i would know i have family that like to bake how can i make apple pie
Hi, I faithfully use your pie crust recipe and it’s beautiful, but I find that when I make apple pies, there is always a gap. I use Courtland apples, I’m not a big fan of granny Smith. What can I do to fix that issue?
Hi Rhona, The most common cause of pie gaps are not venting the top crust. Are you making a solid top? When you use a solid top with no vents, the steam from the cooked apples has no where to go and puffs up the crust. Be sure to cut enough vents in your top crust to allow the steam to escape.
Love your recipes and tips. Would you have a recipe for Pineapple pie? My grandmother made it for Thanksgiving and there is no recipe. I would like to know if you could guide me on how to make a crust that is not flaky.
Hi Karen! I wish we could help more, but we don’t have one. Was it on a pastry crust like our favorite pie crust recipe? Or perhaps on a shortbread crust like this lemon tart recipe? We hope you can find the recipe!
Trina,
The pie was on her pie crust. Thank you for your help.
What type of pie is in the photo above under Chocolate Pies under 42)? Thanks! Love all your recipes!!
Hi Terre, This is the Nutella Tart with Toasted Hazelnut Crust.
I’m making your Apple Slab pie and Pecan Pie and hopefully your Great Pumpkin pie if I have time. I’m very ambitious this year.
What a great collection of pies! Love any kind of dessert as long as its pie!!!
But I am old fashioned farm boy and I make all my pastry with flour and lard…..grandma wasn’t wrong about that one.
My family does not love fruit pie and is a little picky but I want to know what pie might be good for the whole family. I made your chocolate chess pie last year and they loved it. I want to try something different this year. Any ideas?
Hi Harper, if you’re looking to stick with chocolate, try the Fudge Brownie Pie or French Silk Pie. Let us know what you choose and how it is!
I love your recipes! I can’t wait to make the sweet potato pie. I plan to use brown sugar bourbon. (that stuff is great!) use only 2 tablespoons. Will your flaky crust be crisp on the bottom in the sweet potato pie? I don’t like soggy crust.
Hi Betty, the bottom crust cooks through but if you want a crisp crust, I recommend partially blind baking it. You can use these instructions for blind baking pie dough.
Your sweet potato pie is tried and true! My friend , who grew up in the south, told me it had soul in it. That’s a huge compliment coming from him!
A huge compliment!! I love that pie recipe.
So which ones will you be making for your family? I usually do pumpkin slab pie, pecan pie bars, and something chocolate but I want to switch it up this year. Would love to know which you are planning to choose for inspiration!
Hi Janel! Every year I make the classic pumpkin pie and 1 other– either pecan pie or salted caramel apple pie. This year I might do an apple crisp! For chocolate pie, the magical chocolate pie is always a hit.
Hi Sally,
I love collecting and experimenting with recipes. It has been a hobby of mine for many a year. I just had to tell you that I love your site; your pictures, your cooking instructions and great recipes too!!!!!
Now I have to figure out which one to try tonight!!!
Thanks for your great work! You are appreciated!!!
Natalie
This is so comprehensive! Have you ever made a cranberry curd tart recipe? I’d love to try that.
Thanks Anne! I don’t have a cranberry curd tart recipe. Sounds incredible!
Hi Sally!
I have tried several of your recipes since subscribing. And have not once been disappointed. I have several that I get so many compliments on! The next one I’m going to try is The salted caramel apple pie bars. I think they will be the perfect size to have after a large Thanksgiving meal. And they sound so yummy!
I will be making the pies this Thanksgiving. I am not a pie baker and the crust is intimidating to me. I will be making your pumpkin and apple pies. I’ve watched your videos, but I’m a little confused. Should I blind bake the crusts on both pies and do prick them so they don’t shrink. Thanks for the help.
Hi Carol, you only need to blind bake pie crusts when the recipe calls for it. My pumpkin pie does require blind-baking, but that’s worked into the recipe instructions. Follow that recipe for details.
Thank you, Sally!
It’s quite simple and your flaky pie crust will make it all the more special for the holidays! Its 3 cups of halved cranberries (fresh) to 1.5 cups raisins that have been microwaved for a minute with 1to 2 T vanilla and 2 tsp of almond extract. At least 1 cup of sugar to 1.5 c sugar and 3 T flour. The crust is best if your pre-bake the crust for 15 minutes at 425’F. ( Pierce the crust with a fork on the sides to help prevent shrinking.) Then add cranberry mixture and lattice, or traditional top crust. Bake as for your apple pie until it bubbles on a 425′ oven till the crust starts to brown and the filling bubbles.
If the outer edges of the crust start to get too dark a foil or pie edge cover works well. Placing a cookie sheet under is also advised as it may bubble over. Cook for 45 minutes or until the filling bubbles.
Cool on a rack.
The filling should thicken as it cools. My meme made this at Christmas and my mom was lucky enough to have her write this one down. My mom made it every holiday and her daughters have kept this tradition going as well. Enjoy! I found a similar recipe in an old NE cookbook as well.
Hello Sally,
My meme made mock cherry pie with cranberries and raisins and almond extract. It really tastes like a tart cherry pie! I can pass it on if you are interested. I think it might be a NE thing too. Love your recipes~!
Celeste from MA
Hi Celeste, We love hearing about different recipes! Feel free to email it to us at sally@sallysbakingaddiction.com
These all look DELICIOUS! All your recipes that I’ve made so far have been nothing short of amazing, so I’m sure these will be too!
Hi Sally, I am not hosting this year so I am kind of limited to what I can bring. Out of the list I will be making your favorite cranberry sauce, the soft dinner rolls and finally the pecan praline pumpkin pie (I doing the November challenge). To my HUGE regret, I am gluten intolerant and never get to eat your creations but I get a kick out of making them and hearing people say oooohh and aaaaagh!
You have just made my job easier! I have NEVER made anything from your site that hasn’t been absolutely fab! And I bake often! Thanks so much!
Hi! Is there a pie you suggest for a beginner baker?
Hi Preeti! Absolutely- I suggest a slab pie or galette for a beginning baker. Here are 2 of my favorite recipes: pumpkin slab pie and apple galette.
What pie is pictured above in the white dish with ice cream on top and cherries on the table? I can’t find that one>>>
Hi Bobbi– my bourbon cherry crisp.
I love how you show TONS of pictures for every recipe! And you give great tips on how to make every recipe. The pies look great and the only addition I will make to the pumpkin pie will be the addition of a small amount of molasses. It’s a traditional addition to pumpkin pie with my family in New England
Thanks so much!
I’m definitely making your Praline Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving this year. That topping sounds awesome and is calling out to me. Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving!
I’ve already had requests for your chocolate chip cookies so those are going to be made, as well as the new cranberry bars and your pumpkin pie (store bought crust though… still just can’t do it!)
Yum,
I’m 100% sure that I’m going to make the pumpkin pie one that look ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, DELIGHTFUL.
I’m so excited to me this.
I just want to try every single one of these! I’m going to try your new cranberry crumble pie bars next weekend, then either your sky high chocolate mousse pie or your spice cake for Thanksgiving day! You’re recipes have become an important part of all our family holidays and birthdays 🙂
I can’t wait to try some of these pies!
Wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without Pumpkin and Pecan pies. Those will be on my dessert table.
WOW!! I think you have everyone covered in the pie area. HA!!
